A Thought About The Flood

Many have argued about whether the flood was global or local and I want to put up for your consideration that the Scriptures do not tell us. Remember that the word “earth” in the bible means “land” and does not refer to the planet Earth. Because of this many have concluded that the flood must have been global, but this is not necessarily the case. I would submit to you that there is no reason that the flood had to be global in order to fulfill God’s purpose in it. God’s purpose was to rid the world of all the people and animals (except for Noah and his family and two of every kind of animal) and God could have done this with a reasonably local flood. We already know that the people all lived in around the same area and spoke the same language (it is not until the tower of Babel that the people are spread out) and although they had built cities, these cities would have been in the same basic region. Also, the text nowhere says what would happen to the sea creatures that could swim anyway. It must be deduced that God had no intention of destroying them. In my opinion, God did not really intend any punishment on the animals, but did not choose to save all of them but just have them reproduce. The punishment could have been just as effective using a local flood instead of a global flood and it seems that both logic and science would affirm this.
